The Method

How the BLI Works

The Black Leadership Inventory is a self-administered leadership diagnostic and developmental framework originally developed by Dr. Daveon Swan, Founder and CEO of The Formation Collective, Inc. It rests on a simple premise: leadership in the Black tradition is not a single posture but a constellation of inherited methodologies, each necessary to the survival and flourishing of the whole.

The instrument does not crown a winner. It names the role you were already playing.

Across seventy-two questions, the BLI measures your leadership disposition across nine archetypes — each rooted in the actual methodology of a Black historical figure. The result is a primary archetype, a secondary archetype, a rubric tier, and a sub-dimension profile that shows where within your archetype your leadership is most developed.

The Scale

A 4-point response, not a 5-point Likert

The BLI uses a four-point scale: Rarely · Sometimes · Often · Almost Always. There is no neutral midpoint. This is intentional — removing the middle option surfaces instinctive response over aspirational self-image, which is where the most honest leadership data lives.
